In addition to our unique history programs and exciting special events, the Natural and Historic Resources Division, also hosts signature events throughout the year. Be sure to mark your calendars for these annual not-to-be-missed events.

Echoes of the Enslaved: An Immersive Experience through History and Archeology

Join us for a two-day commemoration that addresses the lasting legacies of chattel slavery in Prince George’s County. Several events within this series are held at the location of long-forgotten slave quarters onsite at the Mount Calvert Historical and Archaeological Park. 

Experience and learn this history with the generous cooperation of the Slave Dwelling Project, a non-profit whose vision is to encourage a “more truthful and inclusive narrative of the history of the nation that honors the contributions of all our people.” Joseph McGill, the founder of the Slave Dwelling Project, has taken his message of historic preservation and heritage to over 23 states and Washington, D.C. ensuring that the places where enslaved families lived and passed on their culture will be here for the future generations.

Festival of Herbs, Tea & the Arts

Montpelier’s Annual Festival of Herbs, Tea, and the Arts is a unique blend of foods, crafts, and plants. With more than 30 vendors, there is something for everyone! 

John Wilkes Booth Escape Route Tours

Follow the trail of President Lincoln’s assassin from Washington City to Port Royal, Virginia, on this fully narrated bus tour led by nationally recognized authorities on the Lincoln assassination. Enjoy history lessons, tours of historic buildings, and great scenery on this 12-hour adventure. Tours sponsored by Surratt House Museum in spring and fall. 

Battle of Bladensburg Encampment

Join British and American War of 1812 troops as they camp on Riversdale House Museum’s lawn to prepare for the Battle of Bladensburg. You could be recruited to join the American militia! Enjoy children’s activities, live music, and period-inspired refreshments. 

Jazz & Wine at Marietta

Celebrate summer with wine and jazz on the beautiful lawns of Marietta House Museum! Bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy wine, jazz, food, crafts, craft demonstrations, book authors, and a tour of the historic home. Admission includes a wine sampling glass. Ages 21 & up. 

The Great Jack O’Lantern Campfire

Bask in the warmth of a fall campfire, roast marshmallows, and enjoy popcorn and hot cider. Listen to haunted Halloween tales, see a dazzling display of more than 50 hand-carved illuminated jack o'lanterns, and more at Darnall’s Chance. Don't miss this howling good time! 

Gingerbread House Contest & Show

This holiday season, history is a little sweeter at Darnall’s Chance House Museum! Come and view an amazing display of edible gingerbread houses. No nibbling allowed! Visitors have the opportunity to vote for their favorite entries in the Viewer's Choice Competition.
